Buying guide: Women's Ethnic Wear

This is the biggest single section of the shop and the one most people come to first before Diwali. It covers sarees, kurtis, kurta sets, sharara and anarkali sets, an unstitched suit and a winter ethnic co-ord. Here is how to pick between them.

Sarees

There are three kinds here. Printed soft cotton sarees are for daytime: a puja morning, a family lunch, a market visit in a new outfit. The embroidered organza saree with its scalloped lace border is for an evening where a heavy silk would be too warm, and it comes with an unstitched blouse piece. The brocade silk saree, woven with gold and silver zari, is the wedding and reception choice, also with a blouse piece. A ready-to-wear mirror-work saree comes with the pleats already stitched: wrap, hook, adjust the pallu, and you are dressed in minutes.

Kurtis and kurta sets

Kurtis are single tops, worn with leggings, palazzos or jeans. Short kurtis sit at hip length and go with denim; straight and A-line kurtis are longer and suit leggings and churidars. Kurta sets add matching straight pants, and some add a dupatta, so the outfit is complete in one order. Printed cotton sets are office and daytime wear; embroidered sets with lace, pearls or thread work are for the festive lunch; sequin and zari sets are for the evening.

Sharara, anarkali and suit sets

A sharara set has a flared bottom that moves when you dance, which is why it is the sangeet outfit. An anarkali is a long flared dress worn with a dupatta, relaxed enough for a long family function. The unstitched three-piece suit is fabric only, for your tailor, and can be cut to any size. The winter-knit ethnic co-ord, with embroidered churidar pants, is for the cold weeks after Diwali when a summer kurta is not enough on its own.

Sizes

Kurtis, kurtas, sets and the ready-to-wear saree come in S to XXL. Kurtis are cut relaxed, so take your usual size; if you want extra drape, go one up. Unstitched sarees and suit fabric have no size. Check the product description for what is included, such as a blouse piece, dupatta or pants, before ordering.

Which fabric for which day

  • Cotton and cotton blends breathe and wash at home. Right for daytime and for anyone sitting near diyas.
  • Rayon drapes softly and creases less than cotton. Good for travel and long days.
  • Georgette and organza are light and sheer, made for evenings. They should be dry cleaned.
  • Brocade silk is heavy and warm. Wear it in the evening, and store it refolded along new lines every few months.

Delivery and returns

Every order ships free to any serviceable pincode in India and is paid in cash at the door, with nothing added. Dispatch from Hyderabad is within one working day; most of India receives the parcel in five to seven days. If a garment does not fit, return it unused within seven days of delivery. You pay the return courier and we refund the product price by UPI or bank transfer. Order at least ten days before a function so there is time to try it on.
