What Diwali actually asks of an outfit

Think about how the day goes. You sit on the floor for Lakshmi puja, then light diyas along the balcony rail, then someone brings out the phone for photos, and then dinner or cards run late. The outfit has to do all of that.

• It should sit easily on the floor without riding up or needing to be arranged every two minutes.
• It should stay clear of open flames. Loose, trailing dupattas and wide sleeves are the ones that catch on diya plates.
• It should look good in phone photos taken in low, warm light. Lighter shades and a little shine both work here.
• It should still be comfortable at eleven at night, which rules out anything stiff.

Heavy lehengas fail on the first and last points. A kurta set or a ready-to-wear saree is the easier choice for the puja, with the flared piece kept for the evening.

Care so it lasts past this Diwali

There is no reason a ₹99 piece should not come out for next year’s puja too. Care differs by fabric, so follow what each listing says.

• The mint kurta set takes a gentle cold hand wash. Dry it in the shade and iron on medium from the reverse, over the embroidery.
• The ready-to-wear saree can be hand washed or machine washed on a gentle cycle in cold water. Wash the embroidered blouse separately by hand, and dry both in the shade.
• The black anarkali is dry clean recommended. Store it on a hanger inside a cover so the embellishment does not catch on other clothes.
• For the co-ord, check the product description for care and treat it like any embroidered top: cold water, inside out, no wringing.

Whatever the piece, keep it away from the mehendi cone and the ghee spoon. Those two leave the stains that are hardest to shift.
